Holiday decorating isn’t really my thing. I decorate for two holidays – Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s not that I don’t love celebrating other holidays, it’s just really hard for me to have “extra” home decor out at any given time. For me, simple holiday decor is the best way to go. I absolutely love seeing how others decorate for the holidays though and I think it really makes a house feel like a place to come home to. In this Christmas Home Tour I’m going to share a few places I’ve spruced up for the season. Plus a few tips for instantly adding Christmas into your current home decor.

This year, the dining room and the living room are really the only rooms touched with holiday decor. We’ve been in this house for 5 years now and each year I pick up one or two more simple holiday decor items to add to our collection. I really like to wait until the week after Christmas for all of the end of the year sales. We did wrap the boys’ headboards in Christmas lights but that led to a little incident and they were taken down.
Simple Holiday Decor Ideas
I absolutely love the way my Christmas tree turned out this year. With a little research, I was able to have some fun with our sad, little, pre-lit tree. You can find all of my favorite tips for Christmas tree decorating in this post – Child Proof Christmas Tree Tutorial In 5 Easy Steps!
Here’s a tip. With kids, you might wait to wrap presents until the last minute so curiosity doesn’t get the best of them. Wrap a few decoy presents or use decorative pillows!
Every year my dad read Twas the Night before Christmas to the family. It started because Clement C Moore is a relative but has become something special to me. This year I decided to pick up a few Christmas books at the thrift store and wrap them. Each night we will open one and read it. The last one being, you guessed it, Twas the Night Before Christmas. My kids are loving it! You can pick up Christmas books at the library too.
A couple of years ago our family was given this amazing handmade quilted Christmas advent calendar. There are 25 little pockets for 25 little Christmas ornaments. The kids love it and it helps them understand how many more days until Christmas.
I love the Willow Tree Nativity, I have the starter set but can’t wait to add to it. This year the kids have their own nativity set so hopefully they won’t play with mine. When you click on the listing below you can select other sets to add on to your nativity.
Another simple holiday decor idea is to add ornaments to baskets, buckets or vases. I added two little Christmas sprigs from the dollar store for this simple holiday arrangement.
Don’t forget about decorative pillows! You can easily change out pillow covers so it costs less and you don’t have to store so many decorative pillows. Husbands everywhere will be thrilled. Also, think outside the “Christmas” box. This gold star pillow wasn’t a Christmas decorative pillow, but brought out at the right time it is! I picked it up at a going-out-of-business sale at Hancock Fabric for a couple of bucks.
Here’s a tip: Adding red is a great way to instantly add the Christmas spirit into your simple holiday decor. Red is such a vibrant color that it will give your everyday decor a pop. Poinsettias are a great way to add red around the house and you can pick them up for a great price on (or around) Black Friday. Home Depot and Lowes always have them this time of year.
And here’s something I started this year. I picked up a couple of simple garlands from the dollar store and added ribbon or strips of drop cloth (I love the way it frays). Each year I am going to add something to the garland and it will keep getting more full. I’ll add things like lights, ornaments, and ribbon.

And there you have it, very simple holiday decor ideas. I hope you enjoyed this Christmas Home Tour…and by that I mean 2 rooms! Over the years our decor will spread into other rooms but I’m ok with adding to it a little at a time. There are times that all of the magazine worthy Christmas home tours stir that Christmas bug within me and I feel like I have to do all the things. But I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed decorating my house this year. It might not be much but we’re happy. Off to have a little Christmas music dance party with my kiddos.
