During a Girls’ Night last week I was speaking with a friend who had just purchased a silver reindeer. Her sister has been looking for just the right silver reindeer and she was pretty excited to show her the one she had found. I hadn’t thought of silver reindeer for my holiday decor before and now I just love the idea of them all over my house this holiday season.
Holiday decor can get expensive – especially the trendy items. But I found a way to turn thrift store items into stylish pieces. And I’ve teamed up with some of my favorite blogging friends to bring you this trash to treasure holiday edition!
Alrighty, now for the awesome silver reindeer makeover! I love checking out the holiday section the thrift store. Sometimes you find great things and sometimes you find things you like but they just need something to make them special to you. This paper mache reindeer reminded my of the conversation I had with my friend and I thought, “I can have a silver reindeer too!”
On this particular trip to the thrift store, I wasn’t having any luck. I knew I needed something for our trash to treasure holiday edition blog hop so I took one last loop through the holiday section and found this guy. By the way, I think this guy is Comet.
You can update just about anything with a little spray paint. Silver spray paint would have worked great on Comet but I received Silver metallic cream from Country Chic Paint when I won a furniture flipping contest earlier this year so I used that and it worked great! It dries quick and I did 3 coats.
The three coats did the trick but adding a bit of antiquing wax gave it that extra oomph! I love how it ages the silver just a little.
Couldn’t find a reindeer at your thrift store to paint? There are some silver reindeer on Amazon you can order. The links below are affiliate links, which means I make a small percentage on your purchases at no extra cost to you.
Comet would have been just fine the way he was but he would have blended into the other neutral decor I have in the house. Now he has a fresh new coat that makes him special!
My friends are also sharing their holiday finds. Take a look and get inspired!
