Let me be the first to tell you I know how hard it is to get those family photos done each year! I’ve started getting our clothes ready at the end of summer so we are ready as soon as the leaves start to turn. We actually had two family photoshoots this year due to grumpy kids (and daddy).
Why do I force my family to do this every year? Well for one I love updating our large family photo in our entryway. I like to send out Christmas cards and brag about how cute my kids are. And because I like photography and editing photos.
Here are a few of my favorites from the first family photoshoot (in the evening) and some of my tips for your own family photoshoot.
I like to think about where my photos will be displayed and what I want my Christmas card to look like. Then I pick colors for our photos. Last year we had similar colors but with maroons instead of corals.
Mix it up for poses. Try to do something fun with the kids to get their mind off of taking photos. My kids loved running in the middle of the road (great parenting right there). Some of my favorite pictures are the candid ones.
Use immediate rewards. Telling them you have a surprise for them at home won’t cut it because they will want it “right now mommy!” I use Smarties. They don’t get the kids messy and they can’t really be seen (like chocolate or other candy).
Don’t give up. At this point my oldest was done taking posed pictures but he was pretty happy to show us his climbing skills!
