Last year we put both of our boys in the same bedroom. We had the space for them to have their own room but eventually they will share so I decided why not get used to it now. Plus, the extra bedroom now acts as a toy room and it’s so nice to be able to put that mess behind a closed door and not look at it. Our oldest has been on a make shift bed and I’ve been meaning to spruce it up a bit. I got this door for free from a family member who updated their doors and used a chalk mix to turn it into a fun painted door headboard.
We first made this door for a wedding backdrop and then it was used as decor in our home. Painted doors are so fun to decorate with. I’ve seen some fun DIY ideas with doors. Here are a few of my favorites…
DIY Painted Door Headboard
I’ve mentioned on Facebook Live that I love the wax from Diva of DIY, it smells great and it’s easy to use. The Diva Chalk Mix is just as easy to use. They sent me a sample of the paint additive to try and I created this door headboard with it. I’ve made my own chalky finish paint with other products and I love the simplicity and the wide range of colors I can choose from since you use regular latex paint.
Make sure to clean the surface thoroughly; I use a mixture of bleach and water. Wait for the bleach to dry from the surface you are working on before brushing on the first coat. The first coat will be streaky, with light colors you will probably need 3-4 coats to get a full coverage.
After that I sanded the entire surface lightly and then sanded certain areas more for distressing. I also used a stain as a glaze to warm up the color. Then I finished it off with the Diva of DIY wax.
For a while I had it in the living room just to add dimension but the boys’ room needed it so I reluctantly gave it up. We just slid it behind the bed. I was worried it would fall but it hasn’t. I would brace it to the frame just to be safe.
