Well hello there friends. My name is Jes and I am a wife, a mother, a Netflix lover, and I have a love painting furniture and decorating my home DIY style!
The short story:
In high school I had a teacher call me a quitter and gave up on me just because I wanted to try something new. I did it anyway and excelled but I have always had the constant fear of others judging me. I think moms tend to be the hardest on themselves so I hope to create a community of encouragement and love. No judgements! My DIY Envy was developed to encourage women to develop their talents and establish a home they love. I believe in constantly learning and trying new things
I share easy DIY tutorials, recipes and tips for creating a home you love on a budget.
What is My DIY Envy?
When I was first married I struggled a lot with what I called mommy envy. I had this deep desire to be the best wife (and later mom) I could be. When I talked to others and read blogs about all the amazing things they were doing I immediately would tell myself I wasn’t doing enough. I was wrong.
The reality is we all have our own talents and our journey is meant to discover those talents and develop others we might not have yet. We all need to stop comparing our firsts with what it takes others years to accomplish. I by no means knew how to make and use chalk paint when I first started. I hope this blog helps you get started and if this is something you enjoy I encourage you to stick with it, even when you mess up.
How I Got Here
Growing up I knew I wanted to be a writer. Specifically a journalist. I interned at the local paper and loved it. I patterned my life around “13 going on 30” and “Gilmore Girls.” My junior year of high school I competed in DECA (a marketing competition) and found that marketing was another passion of mine.
In college I felt like a little fish in a big pond and began to feel a little deflated. I didn’t think I had what it takes to get into the journalism/marketing world. I settled into the English major and did just enough to graduate.
Each job I’ve held has allowed me to dabble in marketing in some form, whether it’s making suggestions or running social media. In 2012 I was a Career Advisor for an online college and every day I coached students on how to sell themselves to get what they want. I taught them how to find the job, apply for the job, and then get it. I began to realize I was coaching them to go after their dreams when I wasn’t doing that myself.
When our second child was born I had the opportunity to become a stay at home mom and I love that job first but with love and support I decided to go after my dream. I began to push forward with this blog and I hope to create a community of encouragement and love. Now
What I do
I am my kids mom. I used to roll my eyes when my mom would turn talk radio on to Dr. Laura and hear her say this. My dream of becoming a journalist didn’t include a husband, home, and kids. I am so happy dreams change and evolve because I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have my precious little family.
In my spare time (oh insert sarcasm please)… more like while kids are napping or running around naked I love to paint furniture or work on a DIY home decor project. I then share those projects with you in hopes that it encourages you to explore your talents or develop new ones.
